Getting started with ChessOpeningSmith
This guide offers a simple path, in five steps, for your first sessions. There is no need to do everything on the same day. Each step can take a few minutes, and you can stop after any of them.
1. Create an account
Create a free account with an email address. The Apprentice plan requires no payment and has no end date. Once signed in, you reach your space, with the menu on the left.
2. Build a first repertoire
Open My openings and create a new repertoire. Choose the colour you play most often. Play the moves on the board: each move is added to the tree. For a different opponent reply, go back and play another move; a branch is created.
Keep it short at first: one main line and one or two common opponent replies are enough. You can write a comment on a move to remember its idea.
3. Import a PGN, if you have one
If your variations already exist in a PGN file, use the Import or export screen. A summary appears before anything is created, and the import creates a new repertoire without touching the others. The PGN import guide explains the steps and limits.
4. Start a first training session
From the repertoire card, choose Train. The opponent plays its moves and you play yours. After a mistake, the expected move can be shown and the line comes back later in the session. A short session is a good start.
5. Choose how you review
In Training method, spaced repetition is recommended: well-known lines spread out and missed lines come back quickly. You may prefer a regular rhythm or a free mode with no schedule. The Info button at the top of each screen explains what you see.
Questions before you start
Do I need to set everything up at the start?
No. The default settings are fine to begin with. You can adjust them later.
How long does a session take?
It depends on the number of lines. A few lines often take a few minutes.
Where can I find help on a screen?
The Info button at the top of the screen summarises what the page shows and what you can do.
