ChessOpeningSmith
A chess opening repertoire builder for your own choices
A useful repertoire records the decisions you intend to make at the board. ChessOpeningSmith helps you build that tree, separate your choices from your opponent’s replies and keep the explanations that make each branch worth remembering.
Create a free accountBuild a repertoire you can maintain
Start with one playing color and an opening you already use. Add your preferred move, then the replies you actually encounter. A small, explained tree is easier to maintain than a large imported file whose ideas you do not yet understand.
Play moves directly on the board in the editor. Set a main continuation, keep useful alternatives and add comments, annotation symbols, arrows and circles. A note can identify an important square, an exchange to aim for or a signal that it is time to change plans.
Import PGN without surrendering your decisions
If you already have opening variations in PGN, import them and inspect the resulting tree. Check the playing color, useful branches and comments before treating the file as your preparation. A line appearing in an import does not mean you have chosen or understood it.
Keep opening material distinct from a collection of games you want to analyze. PGN supports both, but a complete game is not automatically a repertoire suited to your play. PGN export gives you a portable copy of the variations you decide to keep.
Connect moves with plans
At a branching point, explain why you prefer one continuation. Use Stockfish to check a tactical possibility or move order, then write the conclusion in words you understand. An engine score cannot replace a plan you can recall during a game.
Once the tree is ready, use the opening trainer to test your recall. Return to the builder when a mistake exposes an unclear idea. This editing and practice loop improves the repertoire without assuming that every problem needs a longer line.
Questions before you start
Can I use the chess repertoire builder for free?
Yes. Apprentice includes two repertoires and up to 1,000 positions in total. Training has separate limits; check the feature overview before importing a large file.
Does the builder choose my openings for me?
No. It lets you create, import, annotate and organize your own choices. You decide which variations belong in your personal chess opening repertoire.
